Narrative Editing

1. Introduction:

Does it capture your interest? Do you know what the essay will be about from the introduction? Is there a sentence that expresses the topics or main ideas to be discussed?

2. Body Paragraphs:

Do they have topic sentences? Are they related to the introduction? Do they fit organizationally? Are there examples, quotes, or supporting details to explain the body paragraph's relation to the topic?

3. Conclusion:

Is there a point to the essay? What is it? Does the conclusion drive home the point? Does the conclusion relate to the introduction? How?

4. General Writing--

Is there a strong personality? Do they sound original?

Are the ideas important enough to write about? Does the author stay on track during essay?

Is the essay organized around a central idea? Is it chronological? Cause and effect? What is the pattern?

Do the sentences flow or are they all the same? Is there a mix of sentences?

Are the words simple and basic? Did the author strive to write accurately? Do the words evoke images? Are there lots of tired phrases and cliches?

How are the conventions? Do they make grammar or spelling errors? Do they misuse words?

Welcome!

In today's class we will become better acquainted with voice, sentence fluency, and grading with the six traits of writing. We will review our homework, and we will discuss the writing process and receive our first essay assignment: the narrative.



1. Journal:

Tell me a story about someone of whom you are proud. Who is it? Why are you proud of them? What did/do they do? Where do they do it?

2. 6- traits activities...

A. Get a voice!

B. Sentence Fluency!

Combine these 10 simple sentences into 4 sentences using words and punctuation like: (,and ,or ,but) as, after, before, during, since, when, if, while, because, etc.

I enjoy thinking about my writing.
It makes me a better writer.
It makes me a better reader.
Thinking helps me change my words.
I try to find the best word to describe what I mean.
It helps me write better sentences.
I am clearer to the reader.
The reader enjoys it more.
I am able to get my point across.
Thinking about what I write is helpful.

Writing Process—

Invent— Brainstorming, outlining, journaling, watching tv, reading, chatting… Organize our Ideas and Content
Draft-- Writing a sample essay with our Ideas and Content.
Revise-- Focusing on Sentence Fluency and Word Choice
Edit-- Focusing on Conventions—Grammar, spelling, etc.
Publish-- It’s perfect.

6 traits—
Voice- Your personality… the way only you write.
Ideas/content-- The meat. What it’s about.

8 parts of speech-
Verb Shows action. I ran.
Adverb Describes a verb. I ran quickly
Adjective: Describes a noun. The barn was red
Preposition: Shows place. It was above me.
Pronoun: Takes the place of noun. Eric said he would cry.
Conjunction: And, but, or, yet. Connector. I love you, and I don’t.
Noun: Person, place, thing or idea. The dog loved the cat.
Article: A, an, the.\
Subject: What the sentence is about.
Since I like music, I listen to it a lot.

Sentence Types:
Sentence: A complete thought: Verb and subject. Words, Clauses, Phrases.
Phrase: A group of words without a subject or verb or both: Ex. To the store.
Clause: A group of words with a subj. and a verb. Ex: When I ate
2 types of clauses:
Independent clause: A group of words with a subject and verb that makes sense. Ex- i love my tea
Dependent clause: A group of words with subj. and verb that does not make sense
Ex. when I love tea
Simple: One independent clause. I LOVE TEA.
Compound: Two independent clauses: I love tea, and I love you.
Complex: One idependent clause and one dependent clause.
Ex: When I am hungry, I eat
I eat when I am hungry.

Common Errors— Comma Splice
ex: It is nearly half past five, we cannot reach town before dark

Run-on
Ex: It is nearly half past five we cannot reach town before dark.

Fragment
When I went to the store to buy some bread.

Tense Shift
I was happy to see her. We race to the store.

Verb Tense Agreement
Jon buy clothes at the store.

Pronoun anteceedent agreement
Mike is someone that eats a lot.
The dog ate food because they are like that.

Parallelism: I love to run, bike, and hiking.

Materials-

In English 101 we will first investigate how to read and how to think about reading. After that, we will attempt to create 4 perfect essays that blend the genres of writing.

Assignments-

NOTE: KEEP ALL YOUR WORK, INCLUDING DRAFTS.
We will have 10 reading assignments, 4 essays, and one portfolio. Each reading assignment is worth 20 points and each essay is worth 100. The portfolio is worth 200. The total amount, then, of points for the semester is 800, I think.

Rules

As an instructor I am expected to be in class on time, be professional, and return graded work in a timely manner.

As a student, you are expected to do the same, plus follow the guidelines in the PC student handbook, turn off your phone, and be prepared.


Attendance


If you miss more than two classes, you may be dropped from the class or worse, fail. Please make arrangements to attend each session of class or notify me if you cannot attend for some reason.

Special Note

Our biggest project, the portfolio, is an explanation of your learning that includes all of your journals, assignments, notes, essays, drafts, marginalia, &c.

Late Work

There is none. Essays and drafts are due in class when requested. If you fail to have a draft on the day it is due, your essay grade will be lowered one mark. If you don't have your essay when it is due, it will not be graded.

Diagnostic Question:

In 30 minutes, write an argumentative essay that has a beginning, middle and end. Your topic should be current, important to you, and small enough to explain in a short essay. Please be sure to convince me to agree with you. What convinces people? Logic, facts, examples, emotions, and honesty.
